【A hidden diner】YOSHINO【OKONOMIYAKI】

Hi! Welcome to Machi's Taxi Restaurant Guide.

Guests on that day wanted to have "okonomiyaki" for their lunch.
So we visited "YOSHINO" near the famous buddhist temple, Sanjusangendo.

Okonomiyaki is a kind of pancake made from batter and some ingredients.
The batter is usually made of wheat flour, grated yam, broth, and shredded cabbage.

To get to this diner, you walk south along the west side of the wall of the Sanjusangendo.
After passing through a small intersection, continue going south a little further.

Then, you will find this sign on your left side.

Undoubtedly, most people visiting this diner for the first time would not be able to find it without this sign and lantern to guide them.

Turn left and go into this alley.

The entrance is on the left side of the red lantern.

In the foreground is what I ordered... "Ikatama"-price 700JPY

Tha name "Ikatama" is a contraction of "ika(squid) and tamago(egg)"
You can also order "Butatama (pork and egg)", and "Gyutama(beef and egg)"

This other is "Sobairi"-price 850JPY

"Sobairi" literally means "including soba noodles".
For this type of okonomiyaki, fried noodles are included, and you can choose from one of the three following ingredients... squid, beef, or pork.

It seems that concierges of a nearby hotel sometimes introduce their guests to this diner.
Therefore you needn't worry... even if they don't have English menus, they are used to serving foreign customers.

If you show this picture to your taxi driver in Kyoto, he’ll have no trouble taking you to this restaurant.

Taxi fare will be:
720JPY from Kyoto station,
800JPY from the Kiyomizu temple.
The above prices are just my approximate guess.

Omura-house 【near the Golden Temple】

Hi! Welcome to Machi's Taxi Restaurant Guide.

Omura-house is a popular restaurant which specializes in "omu-rice".

"Omu-rice" is a Japanese "fusion" cuisine, which includes chicken-rice (fried rice with chicken and flavoured with ketchup) and wrapped with a thin sheet of fried egg.

The word "omu-rice" is an abbreviation of "omelette and rice".

This is "regular omu-rice"-price 730JPY

This is "omu-rice with hashed beef"-price 1050JPY

I ordered this.
"Omu-rice with vegetable curry"-price 880JPY
In this dish, dry-curry (curry flavoured fried rice) is used instead of chicken rice.
It includes plenty of vegetables, and appears to be very nutritious .

Menu

This restaurant stands between two famous world heritage sites, "The Golden Temple" and "Ryoanji Temple", and is a 5 minutes walk away from the Golden Temple.

Note: Because this restaurant is very popular among students who visit Kyoto for their school excursions, I suggest you avoid coming here at lunch time during the school excursion season ( May 6th - June 30th).

Maisaka 【Unagi or broiled eel】

Hi! Welcome to Machi's Taxi Restaurant Guide.

The other day, my wife and I visited the restaurant "Maisaka" to enjoy eel for lunch

This restaurant is popular among local people.
They don't, however, seem to have many tourists as customers.

Because this restaurant stands near the wholesale market, the fish they serve is supposed to be very fresh.

On this visit, I ordered "Unaju"(broiled eel on top of rice).
They have four ranks of Unaju, depending on the size of eel: Special, Matsu, Take, and Ume.
"Special" is the biggest, and "Ume" is the smallest.

Incidently, Matsu, Take, and Ume are names of plants in Japanese.“Matsu” is “pine tree”, “take” is “bamboo”, and “ume” is “plum”.

I chose "Matsu"-price 2500JPY

Someday, I also want to try the "Special"- price 3500JPY.

My wife ordered "Kinshi Ju"(broiled eel with thinly sliced egg on top of the rice)-price 2000JPY

Afterwards, my wife said the eggs were sweet and tasty.

Eel is believed to be a good remedy for regaining vitality to your body, especially during the hot, humid summers in Japan.

You may think eating eel is eerie, but most western people I know who have tried it say that it's really tasty!
Now's your chance to try good quality eel in Japan!

800JPY from Kyoto station,
640JPY from Toji temple.
The above prices are just my approximate guess.

Ono-tei 【inexpensive Donburi restaurant】

Hi! Welcome to Machi's Taxi Restaurant Guide.

Recently, I visited "Ono-Tei" which has various kinds of inexpensive Donburi.

Donburi literally means "a big bowl for rice".

In a restaurant, however, it means a kind of meal "something on top of rice in a Donburi bowl".

This time, I ordered this.
"Wagyu Stamina Don"-price 500JPY

Wagyu means Japanese Beef.

The chef uses  his own home-made oyster sause, and it's really nice.
I also assure you that raw eggs in Japan are really safe to eat.

At this restaurant, they have many kinds of Donburi, such as:

Seiyoufu Oyako Don(Western Style Chicken & Egg Donburi),
Maguro-zuke Don(Soy-sauce Dipped Tuna Donburi), and so on.

This chef has learnt Italian cooking, as well as Japanese.

This restaurant may look very small,  but there is also a Japanese room inside.

The next time, I think I will order "Butashabu Don"(Boiled thinly sliced pork Donburi).

I intend to come to this restaurant often to eventually try every kind of Donburi.
